Sports - Impact on the Social, Economic, Society and Political Status

Sports encompass several aspects that have a great impact on the social, economic and political status and development of people. The main aspects of sports that have an impact on the way sports will affect the people around whom sports are played are the politics of sports, accepting defeat in politics, how sports can be used to create peace and the way sportsmen and sportswomen observe ethical practices.

When you participate in sports, there will be a loser and a winner. It is difficult and heartbreaking to lose in a sport. You feel sad or angry that you lost if you made some errors during the game. Acceptance of defeat does not only apply to players, but to their fans as well. Without it, we see violence and bloodshed, as emotions spill over and the worst traits of humanity are allowed to surface.

Sports - Impact on the Social, Economic, Society and Political Status
An attitude of fair play, courtesy, integrity, ethical behavior and gracious in both victory and defeat contributes to good sportsmanship. If you are a supporter of a team or a player, you should embrace these values and accept the results of a game without resorting to abusive language or destructive behavior when your favored teams or players lose in a sport.

When you support the winning player and team, you also need to behave politely. Naturally, you will be elated by the victory. It is understandable that you will want to celebrate and savor the moment. However, there has to be a limit to this. Rather than focus on the joys of winning, they thrive on the pain of defeat and enjoy humiliating their opponents.

Defeat in sports should not be seen as a crushing event, but instead, players, coaches and supporters should not give up, but view it as an opportunity to evaluate why they lost and possibly set new goals in their training regimes and improve their performance.

Sports and politics are strange bedfellows. On one hand, when politics interferes with sports, the results are not usually pleasant. Sporting associations have performed poorly when political personalities try to influence the running of sports federations. Large sums of money will be spent to influence federation elections and people who may not be qualified for the job get elected into office where they abandon the sports development agenda and serve their political masters.

Another scenario where you see sports and politics meeting is where sportsmen turn to politics or advance a political agenda. Case in point is the American boxer, Joe Louis who appeared in posters aimed at fuelling recruitment of soldiers for World War II. Joe Louis was a national hero after defeating a German boxer in a first-round knockout after he had lost to the same boxer in an earlier match that left America grieving for their lost national pride. In Argentina, a former boat racer, Daniel Scioli, rose to become the vice-president in 2003 to 2007.

Sports have played a very big role in the search for lasting peace both in local settings and in the world. This role cannot be underestimated and the United Nations has a department that is entirely dedicated to developing sport for peace building efforts among other purposes. Sports personalities have also been increasingly selected for the role of United Nations peace ambassadors. This is due to sports embodying values such as sharing and dialogue, mutual respect and social integration.

Through conferences, media outreach, networking and public relations, the use of physical activity, play and sports is a powerful tool in the advancement of the objectives that seek to bring lasting peace and development. This is achieved mainly by emphasizing on dialogue, partnerships and sharing of knowledge in an interdisciplinary exchange.

Sporting embodies fairness, honesty and integrity. Character and playing by the rules is also essential. When one of these values is removed or not taken into consideration, the win for any participating team in a sport becomes pointless and without honor.

Playing dirty is another way that sportsmen cheat in sports. This could be simply using physical force to slow down opponents such as tripping them or stealing team signs that are used by players to communicate between themselves.

At the end of the day, cheating and unfair actions in sports only serve to denigrate the quality of sport and its integrity. It should be up on players, coaches and team managers encourage fair play and honesty in sports. Fans should also not pile too much pressure on their teams that could drive the team to try and cheat in a game.
